I'm very much looking forward to my third Master Course with the Oxford Lieder Festival. The venue and facilities are so perfect that we could hardly fail to have a wonderful time making music of the highest quality. And, to cap it all, we round off our studies with a concert involving everyone which, last year, gained us a standing ovation from the audience in the packed Holywell Music Room.  I look forward to welcoming you all whether as observers or participants."
Sarah Walker CBE, mastercourse leader

Oxford Lieder is delighted to welcome back world-renowned mezzo-soprano Sarah Walker to lead the third annual residential Master Course for advanced students during this year's Lieder Festival. Sarah has been involved with Oxford Lieder for several years; her masterclasses are always a fascinating delight for audience and participants alike. It is a great pleasure and a privilege to host this special week once more.

The Master Course caters for 9 singer-pianist duos who will be resident in the city from 23rd - 29th October for an exhilarating week of coaching as well as access to the full programme of Festival concerts. Applications are encouraged from all over the world, ensuring a high level of emerging talent.

Final Concert

Classes will take place throughout the day between 24th and 28th October inclusive at the North Wall Arts Centre on South Parade, with classes open to the public on 25th, 26th and 27th. The course will culminate in an evening concert given by the participants as part of the Festival series in the Holywell Music Room, Oxford’s foremost chamber music venue, on Wednesday 28th October.

Session

Sarah Walker will be joined by three visiting tutors for three days of coaching on various facets of song performance. These additional coaching sessions are also open to the public and take place in the Music Department of St Edward’s School (across the road from the North Wall). This year’s tutors will include Malcolm Martineau, described by the New York Observer as “one of the world’s finest accompanists”.

The Master Course is part of the 2009 Oxford Lieder Festival Education Programme.
