Christine Brewer to open Oxford Lieder's tenth year

Christine Brewer

2011 is Oxford Lieder's tenth year and gets under way in celebratory fashion with a recital from the great American soprano Christine Brewer, joined by Roger Vignoles. Supported by Jesus College and the Kohn Foundation, this concert paves the way for a spectacular anniversary, with a star line-up developing for the main Lieder Festival (14th-29th October), an outstanding and varied Spring Series, and a continuation of Oxford Lieder's latest project, a live recording of the complete songs of Hugo Wolf.

Festival ends on a high

This year's Lieder Festival drew to an exhilarating close on Saturday 30th October with a concert given by Jonathan Lemalu and Roger Vignoles. Their programme of Schumann, Brahms, Mussorgsky and Richard Rodney Bennett was a perfectly balanced end to the fortnight.

The Festival was without a doubt the biggest and best yet. We are now looking forward to 2011 and our tenth Festival.

First weekend a triumph!

The Festival got underway on Friday and we had a wonderful (and packed) opening weekend. Full houses every night, plus lots of people at the Singing for All workshop and a fantastic bit of outdoor singing of Schumann and Brahms partsongs. The Schools' project at the Ashmolean Museum was a perfect way to open the Festival, showcasing the amazing work of the children involved. We're also delighted that there's been so much interest in supporting our Wolf recording project; details to follow here. Still a vast amount to look forward to!

Stephen Hough at the Lieder Festival

We are pleased to announce that the world-renowned pianist, composer and polymath Stephen Hough will be attending the concert given by the Prince Consort on Thursday 21st and will take part in the pre-concert "artist conversation", introducing his Herbstlieder, which are being given their world premiere that evening.

Artist change: Sunday 17th October

Norman, Dan.jpg

Due to illness, Gary Griffiths has had to withdraw from the concert on 17th October. We are very grateful to tenor Daniel Norman for stepping in. The programm (Franz Schubert's Winterreise) remains unchanged. Daniel Norman is well known to Oxford Lieder audiences; this year he gave a wonderful rendition of Vaughan Williams' On Wenlock Edge, and at last year's Festival he gave a memorable series of recitals covering all of Britten's Canticles. We are delighted to welcome him back.

Welcome to the 2010 Oxford Lieder Festival

Those of you who are Festival regulars will see that we have more events than ever before. Some people will come to everything, many will come to a significant proportion, and some people will choose just one or two. What I hope is that everyone will find much that appeals. For anyone visiting the site who has not attended the Festival before, I can assure you of the very warmest welcome to Oxford.
