Maya Kasir
Maya was born in Jerusalem in 1981. She began singing as a member of the Jerusalem 'Ankor' children's choir and since 1999 joined the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London where she completed both her BMus and MMus degrees, studying with Susan McCulloch and John Evans.
In England, Maya has performed in London's St. John's Smith Square (Young Songmakers' Almanac 2004, Graham Johnson), The Barbican Centre and the Wigmore Hall as well as in Oxford, Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Southampton and the Cheltenham Festival. She won first prize in the Anthony Lewis vocal competition which took place at the Royal Academy of Music in London, adjudicated by Dame Felicity Lott.
Maya has worked with Luciano Berio, Graham Clark, Joan Dornemann, Graham Johnson, Ian Burnside, Robin Bowman, Eugene Asti, John Norris, Rudolf Jansen, Martin Katz and Sarah Walker.
In recital she has performed with Graham Johnson in Lake Como, Italy as well as the South of France. In Israel, she has performed with the New Israeli Opera (Coryphée in Armide 2006), The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israeli Chamber Orchestra and the Ra'anana Symphonette Orchestra. She was a member of the National Theatre 'Habima' 1996-98. Maya also took part in the International Opera Summer Programme 2006 and in the prestigious 'Youth at the Centre' programme, with pianist Marc Verter.
Her Operatic experience include- Cleopatra in Giulio Cesare (Handel), Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart) Zerlina in Don Giovanni (Mozart), Mother in Peter Grimes (Britten), Governess in The Turn of the Screw (Britten) and Maria in West side Story (Bernstein).
Maya has been a recipient of scholarships from the America Israel Cultural Foundation (for studies abroad), Guildhall School of Music and Drama (merit award), The Anglo Jewish Association and the British Council and is now supported by the AICF for studies with Mrs. Abbie Furmansky in Berlin.
