Kieran Rayner


New Zealand baritone Kieran Rayner has just completed a Masters in Performance with Distinction at the Royal College of Music, where he studied with Russell Smythe and was a Stephen Catto Memorial Scholar. He also graduated with degrees in Music and English Literature at the New Zealand School of Music and Victoria University of Wellington in 2011. In 2012-13 he was an Emerging Artist with NZ Opera. He is grateful for the support of the Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation, the Hunn Education Trust, the Josephine Baker Trust, and the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship.

Opera roles include Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, and Vicar Gedge in Albert Herring (Royal College of Music International Opera School); President in Stream of Consciousness Sea of Blood, Fear in 76 Days, and The King in BEL and the DRAGON (RCM Crime and Punishment Contemporary Operas); Blacksmith in The Glass Knight (Saffron Hall Opera, world premiere); The Forester in The Cunning Little Vixen (British Youth Opera); Figaro in The Barber of Seville (Park Opera); Crespel/Luther in The Tales of Hoffmann (English Touring Opera); Marchese d’Obigny in La Traviata, Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly, Papageno in The Magic Flute and the Stolen Sun (New Zealand Opera); Maestro in Ainadamar (NZ International Arts Festival); Guglielmo in Così Fan Tutte, Melisso in Alcina, and Lord Sidney in The Journey to Rheims (Days Bay Garden Opera); Maximillian in Candide; Falke in Die Fledermaus; Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Concert highlights include: Stravinsky’s Pulcinella (RCM with Vladimir Jurowsky); Barber’s Dover Beach and Butterworth’s Love Blows as the Wind Blows (Lewes Festival of Song); Haydn’s Creation (Burgess Hill) and The Seasons (South Somerset); Handel’s Acis and Galatea (Lymington & Penzance); Puccini’s Messa di Gloria (Worcester); Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Orchestra Wellington); Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis; Handel’s Messiah; Bach’s Christmas Oratorio; Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass (Les Alizés, New Caledonia). This year he placed 2nd in the AESS Patricia Routledge English Song Competition. He has an eclectic range of other skills, from period dance to Shakespearean theatre and modern tap dance. For 2016-17, Kieran has accepted a place at the Royal College of Music International Opera School.
