Claire Ward

Soprano


Claire Ward is a London-based soprano from West Sussex. In June 2019, Claire covered Susanna (Mozart) at The Grange Festival and sung the role of Venus in John Blow’s Venus and Adonis. Further roles include Yum-Yum (Gilbert & Sullivan) Micaёla (Bizet) and Mary Crawford (Dove). In scenes Claire has performed as Susanna (Mozart) and Musetta (Puccini) for Royal Academy of Music’s Italian Opera Summer School and Lucia (Britten) and Gretel (Humperdinck) for Royal Academy Vocal Faculty Opera scenes.

A keen recitalist and linguist, Claire was a participant on the Oxford Lieder Mastercourse with pianist Guy Murgatroyd and in April 2019, she and Guy returned as finalists in Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform.

On the concert platform, performances include Brahms Requiem, Smyth Mass in D, Macdowall Magnificat, Haydn Nelson Mass and Mozart Exultate Jubilate and Mass in C Minor and performances of Schubert Mass in G, Mozart Requiem and Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music for the Josephine Baker Trust. Performances in France with the Ensemble Baroque de Toulouse led to a joy for singing Bach. Whilst at the RAM, Claire performed regularly as part of the Kohn Foundation/RAM Bach Cantata series with solo highlights of Bach’s Wedding Cantata BVW 202 in June 2017 and Mass in F major in October 2018. In August 2019, Claire was selected to take part in the Britten Pears Young Artist Bach Cantatas Programme with Philippe Herreweghe and Collegium Ghent. Alongside solo singing, Claire also works as an ensemble singer, recently performing with the Britten Sinfonia Voices at the Barbican and the Royal Albert Hall.

When not performing, Claire is committed to musical education and outreach. As well as teaching piano and singing privately, Claire has worked with the Open Academy/Glyndebourne on the Raise Your Voice programme and co-directed Brent Intermediate Choir from 2017-2018. She is currently a peripatetic singing tutor with Brent Music Service and performs as part of Opera Prelude’s outreach scheme.

In June 2019 Claire graduated from her postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music with Distinction. She continues her studies with Giles Underwood and Joseph Middleton. Claire holds a First-Class Honours degree from Durham University in Music and French, is a Samling Academy graduate and as an Erasmus scholar, spent a year at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Toulouse.
