Ella O'Neill

Ella O’Neill is in demand across the UK as a pianist for song, chamber music and opera. In April 2019, she won the Help Musicians UK Accompanist’s Prize in Memory of Arthur and Gwyneth Harrison in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards at Wigmore Hall, where she has since returned to perform in the venue’s International Song Competition and the finals of the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards. Other performance venues and festivals have included Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Cadogan Hall, the Royal Opera House Crush Room, St Martin-in-the-Fields, Sage Gateshead, Oxford Lieder Festival, Buxton International Festival, Lewes Song Festival, Leeds Town Hall in a livestreamed recital for Leeds Lieder, Opera Holland Park as part of the inaugural Opera in Song recital series and Brighton Dome for Brighton Festival in an all-Schubert recital with Roderick Williams and guests. Ella made her BBC Radio 3 In Tune debut last year performing a selection of these Schubert songs live from the studio with Roderick Williams and Themba Mvula.

Most recently, Ella spent a week in New York participating in the Carnegie SongStudio- headed by Renée Fleming- with regular duo partner Laurence Kilsby. During her time there she made her debut in two out of Carnegie Hall’s three performance spaces- the Zankel and Weill Recital Halls- as well as performing in masterclasses with Hartmut Höll and Isabel Leonard. Later this season, Ella has been invited back to Opera Holland Park’s Opera in Song series to perform Schubert’s Winterreise with Roderick Williams. She will also join Oxenfoord International Summer School and the Samling Academy as a staff pianist. Ella is a Samling artist.

Away from the concert platform, Ella works as a répétiteur for opera. In 2019, she joined Grange Park Opera as their répétiteur for Verdi’s Don Carlo, as well as some rehearsals for Hänsel and Gretel and Porgy and Bess. In Autumn 2020, she recorded a programme of songs for Grange Park Opera with tenor Nicky Spence and mezzo-soprano Kitty Whately for a video production released online as part of GPO's Interim Season. Other companies she has worked with include English Touring Opera, Mid Wales Opera, Tête à Tête Festival, Operasonic, Barefoot Opera and Welsh National Opera Youth Department. In Autumn 2020, she began a tour with English Touring Opera- sadly cut short due to the COVID pandemic- accompanying baritone Julien Van Mellaerts in two staged productions for solo singer and pianist: Britten's song cycle Songs and Proverbs of William Blake and Argento's one-man opera A Water Bird Talk.

Ella graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music in July 2019, where she studied postgraduate piano accompaniment with Simon Lepper, Kathron Sturrock and Roger Vignoles. During her time there she won the Alasdair Graham Pianist Prize in the RCM Lieder Competition and second prize in the Brooks van der Pump English Song Competition. Prior to that she studied undergraduate piano with Mei Yi Foo at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she won the Bryan Davies Memorial Piano Accompaniment Prize.
