Oxford Lieder in Wallingford: The Thought Machine

A magical Thought Machine lets us use our imagination to go anywhere… Dynamic singer-pianist ensemble Songspiel, together with hand shadowgrapher Drew Colby, introduce a range of weird and wistful characters from anxious Viking warriors to the superhero Hamster Man. With music by Cheryl Frances-Hoad, poetry by Kate Wakeling from her award-winning collection Moon Juice, and hand-formed shadow backdrops, this is a fun, participatory event for young people aged 6-11.
Drew Colby will give a hand shadow workshop following on from the performance which needs to be booked separately to the earlier performance.
EnsembleFormed at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama following a side-by-side project with pianist Alisdair Hogarth and The Prince Consort at Wigmore Hall, SongSpiel seeks to revitalise the song repertoire by exploring new possibilities of dramatic presentation, online content and an equal emphasis on both new and established repertoire. ShadowgrapherDrew Colby (born in Great Britain) has worked with puppets in Southern Africa and the UK for over 30 years. He began with glove puppets and marionettes at the age of 12, whilst at school in Namibia. His first professional work was from 1995 – 1998 at the Playhouse Puppet Company in Durban, South Africa. Work spanned traditional double-bridge, long-string marionette shows, open stage bunraku-style puppetry, and performances with mixed styles of puppetry, acting, mask work and dance.
