"Lisa Milne sings with the most ravishing phrasing and depth, full of yearning and sexual fire, fantastically long-breathed melismas and a spotless coloratura that shifts from intemperate joy to near-madness."
The Times
"If there’s such a thing as an accompanist of genius, it is Malcolm Martineau."
The Guardian

Oxford Lieder is delighted to announce the return of Scottish soprano Lisa Milne and distinguished pianist Malcolm Martineau after their stunning performance of Strauss’ Ophelia Lieder in the 2004 Festival.

Since then Lisa Milne has appeared at at the Metropolitan Opera (Pamina in Die Zauberflöte), ENO (Countess Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro) and the BBC Proms. Previously winner of the Maggie Teyte Prize, the John Christie Award and the Royal Philharmonic Society Award, as well as recipient of an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2005, it is a great pleasure to welcome her back with Malcolm Martineau, numbered among the world’s leading accompanists.

Berg’s luminous and expansive Seven Early Songs all take love as their theme, from the luscious "Nacht" to the almost Wagnerian "Liebestode" and exuberant "Sommertage". Set alongside popular songs by Brahms (himself very influential on Berg), Richard Strauss, and the ever-colourful Poulenc, this delightfully varied and rich song programme from two of the genre’s most exciting exponents provides the perfect close to this year’s Oxford Lieder Festival.

The Jesus College Visiting Artist Series

We will be welcoming Malcolm Martineau three more times during the year 2007-8, in his role as the second Jesus College Visiting Artist, a venture generously supported by Jesus College and the Kohn Foundation which brings a world-renowned accompanist to Oxford each year to give three concerts with different wellknown singers, each followed by a masterclass. Please check our website or join our mailing list to ensure you receive further details of these and other events throughout the year.
