25a. Wandering Winter Poets: Heine & Müller
12 October 2021, 11:00 - 12:00
St Hilda's College
“I am vain enough to think that one day, when we are both gone, my name will be mentioned alongside yours.” Thus wrote Heinrich Heine, now considered one of the great German poets, to Wilhlem Müller, who was immortalised in the song cycles of Franz Schubert but otherwise has faded to relative obscurity. Joanna Neilly, Fellow and Tutor in German at St Peter’s College, explores how these reputational tables turned, the mutual admiration of the two poets for one another, and similar themes that run through their work.
