Rowan Pierce gave a sensational performance of English song last year and we’re delighted that she returns to close this season. She will sing Schumann’s great cycle Frauenliebe und –leben, ‘A woman’s life and love’, settings of the Franco-German poet and botanist Adelbert von Chamisso. She also includes Edvard Grieg’s six German songs. Grieg was a prolific song composer, primarily writing in Norwegian and Danish. These six songs represent his main foray into the German language, setting a range of poets including Heine, Goethe and Geibel, and they are a truly glorious collection of soaring melodies, exquisite piano parts and an emotional range from the devastatingly sad to the staggeringly elated.
