Der Abendstern

Der Abendstern

Bist du denn wirklich so fern,
Lieblicher, glänzender Stern?
Sehne mich stündlich von hier,
Wandelnder, heimlich zu dir.
Blickest so hell durch die Nacht,
Still, bis die Sorge erwacht,
Schimmerst am Morgen noch spät,
Matt, wenn die Sonne ersteht.
Winket dein freundliches Licht
Frieden und Ruhe mir nicht?
Schau ich dich, blinkenden Stern,
Möcht’ ich ja sterben so gern.

The evening star

Are you really then so far away,
Dear sweet shining star?
Each hour I long to secretly set out,
O wanderer, towards you.
You gaze so brightly through the night,
Quietly, till cares awake,
You shimmer well into the morning,
Then faintly when the sun rises.
Will your friendly light shine
Its peace and repose on me?
When I behold you, shimmering star,
I would die most willingly.

Clara Schumann, née Clara Josephine Wieck, was a German musician and composer, consider by many to be one of the most disguished composers of the Romantic era. She composed a large body of work, including various piano concertos, chamber works, and choral pieces. She was married to Robert Schumann, and maintained a close relationship with Johannes Brahms.
