In der Campagna (1899) Op. 41 no.2

In the Campagna

I greet the sun setting there,
I greet the silent swell of the sea,
As it thirstily, thirstily drinks in the glow,
Silently bleeding away at its heart.
I greet the plain, how quietly it lies,
The evening’s mysterious, twilit expanse,
Through which I pass, heading home
Ever faster and faster!
How my breast swells with joy,
Surrounded by the airy throng of my songs,
I greet the world, this splendid world!
I greet them all, for I shall see them again tomorrow!
