Um schlimme Kinder artig zu machen (1887–91)

Es kam ein Herr zum Schlösseli
Auf einem schönen Rösseli,
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!
"Sinds gute Kind, sinds böse Kind?
Ach, liebe Frau, ach sagt geschwind",
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!
"In meiner Tasch für folgsam Kind,
Da hab' ich manche Angebind",
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!
Die Frau die sagt: "sehr böse Kind!
Sie folgen Muttern nicht geschwind,
Sind böse!"
Da sagt der Herr: "So reit ich heim,
Der gleichen Kinder brauch ich kein!"
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!
Und reit auf seinem Rösseli
Weit entweg vom Schlösseli!
Ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk, ku-kukuk!

How to make naughty children behave

A gentleman came to the castle,
Riding on a fine horse,
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
The lady looked out of the window
And said: 'My husband's out,
And no one's home but the children,
And the maid's wringing out the washing!'
The gentleman on his horse
Says to the lady of the castle:
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
'Are the children good or naughty?
Come dear lady, tell me quickly,'
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
'For children who are good
I've many presents in my pocket,'
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
The lady says: 'Very naughty children!
They don't obey their mother promptly,
They are naughty!'
The gentleman says: 'Then I'll ride home,
I've no need of children like that!'
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
And he rides away on his horse,
Far away from the castle!
Cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo, cu-cuckoo!
