Ti pomnish’li vecher (1893)

Ti pomnish’li vecher

Ty pomnish' li vecher, kak more shumelo,
V shipovnike pel solovej,
Dushistye vetki akacii beloj
Kachalis' na shljape tvojej?
Mezh kamnej, obrosshikh gustym vinogradom,
Doroga byla tak uzka;
V molchan'e nad morem my jekhali rjadom,
S rukoju skhodilas' ruka.
Ty pomnish' li rjov dozhdevogo potoka
I penu i bryzgi krugom;
I nam nashe gore kazalos' daljoko,
I kak my zabyli o njom!

Do you recall the evening

Do you recall the evening, when the sea roared
And the nightingale sang in the dogrose,
When fragrant twigs of white acacia
Swayed on your hat?
Between the rocks, thickly overgrown with vines,
The path, so narrow, passed,
We rode in silence by the sea,
Hand , in hand.
Do you recall the roar of the pouring rain,
And the spume and spray all around?
And how far away our grief seemed to be,
And how we we had forgotten about it!
