Junggesellenschwur (1901) Op. 49 no.6

Junggesellenschwur

Hoffe, hoffe, hoffe mein Kind,
Daß meine Worte aufrichtig sind,
Ich tu dir schwören,
Bei meiner Ehren,
Daß ich treu bin;
Aber’s Heiraten, ’s Heiraten,
Aber’s Heiraten ist nie mein Sinn

A bachelor's oath

Weep not, weep not, I beg you, do not weep,
I shall love you, but not today,
I shall honour you, as much as I can,
But to take you, take you,
But to take you does not suit me.
Believe, believe, always believe firmly
That I am faithful and will never forsake you,
Always steadfast, never disloyal,
I wish to be true to you,
But I shall never agree to be bound.
Hope, hope, hope, my child,
That my words are sincere,
I swear to you
On my honour
That I am faithful;
But marry, marry,
I do not intend to marry.
