Sommerabend (1901) no.5

Part of a series or song cycle:

8 Frühe Lieder

Sommerabend

Du Sommerabend! Heilig, goldnes Licht!

Summer evening

O summer evening! Holy, golden light!
Gently glowing, the meadow lies ablaze.
Not a sound breaks this peaceful silence,
All is merged into one emotion.
My soul too yearns for the night
And for the coming of dew-pearled darkness,
And will but listen, as in rosy splendour
The dark hours of heaven gleam in silence.
