Widmung (1897)

O danke nicht für diese Lieder,
Mir ziemt es dankbar dir zu sein;
Du gabst sie mir, ich gebe wieder,
Was jetzt und einst und ewig dein.
Dein sind sie alle ja gewesen;
Aus deiner lieben Augen Licht
Hab ich sie treulich abgelesen:
Kennst du die eignen Lieder nicht?

O do not thank me for these songs,
It is I who should be thanking you;
You gave them to me, I return them,
What now is yours and for evermore.
For they have always been yours;
From the light of your dear eyes
I have faithfully gathered them:
Do you not recognize your own songs?
