Amores, amores  (1893) Op. 10

Part of a series or song cycle:

Canções portuguesas (Op. 10 )

Amores, amores

Não sou eu tão tola, que caia em cazar;
desfaz-se-me o pejo e o gosto ficou?
Amores, amores, deixá-los dizer;

Sweethearts, sweethearts

I’m not so foolish as to marry one love;
A woman is not a faithful turtle-dove.
I have a dark-haired sweetheart, and one much smaller,
I have one with fair hair, another much taller.
What harm’s in a kiss, if after our lips meet,
My shame melts away and the taste remains sweet?
When one of them offered me a kiss once in jest,
I paid him with two, by his joke so impressed.
Embraces, embraces, how could they do harm?
Surely they’re the reason God gave me these arms:
One day the tall one came to hold me once more,
Clasped in his embrace I was swept off the floor.
My sweethearts, my sweethearts, they’ll say what they might;
If God gave me flowers, it was for my delight.
I have a dark-haired sweetheart, and one much smaller,
I have one with fair hair, another much taller.
