Tränen und Lächeln (1820) Op. 4

Tränen und Lächeln

Ich sah die volle Träne glühn
In deines Auges Blau,
Das wie ein Veilchen mir erschien
Benetzt mit Tropfen Tau.
Ich sah es lächeln: da erblich
Vor ihm des Sapphirs Schein,
Des Aug's lebend'gem Strahle wich
Der glanzerfüllte Stein.
Den Wolken oft die Sonn' erteilt
Ein Blau, so tief und mild,
Das an dem Himmel noch verweilt,
Wenn Dämm'rung ihn umhüllt:
So heilt solch Lächeln in dem Blick,
Des Herzens trübsten Sinn,
Und läßt ihm einen Strahl zurück,
Der leuchtet drüber hin.

Tears and smiles

I saw the round tear glow
In your blue eyes
That seemed to me like violets
Decked with drops of dew.
I saw your eyes smile: the sapphire’s gleam
Then faded before those eyes,
The stone suffused with light surrendered
To the eye’s living glow.
The sun often bestows upon the clouds
A blue so deep and gentle
That still lingers in the sky
When dusk obscures the heavens:
Thus does such a smile heal
The heart’s great sadness,
And leaves behind a ray
That continues to gleam.
