Six Romances on Verses by English Poets (Op. 62)

Sonet LXVI, 'Sonnet 66'

Izmuchas' vsem, ja umeret' khochu.
Toska smotret', kak majetsja bednjak
I kak, shutja, zhivjotsja bogachu,
I doverjat', i popadat' vprosak;
I nabljudat', kak naglost' lezet v svet,
I chest' devich'ja katitsja ko dnu.
I znat', chto khodu sovershenstvam net,
I videt' moshch' u nemoshchi v plenu,
I vspominat', chto mysli zamknut rot,
I razum snosit gluposti khulu,
I prjamodush'e prostotoj slyvjot,
I dobrota prisluzhivajet zlu.
Izmuchas' vsem, ne stal by zhit' i dnja,
Da drugu budet trudno bez menja.

Sonnet 66

Tired with all these, for restful death I cry,
As, to behold desert a beggar born,
And needy nothing trimm'd in jollity,
And purest faith unhappilly forsworn,
And gilded honour shamefully misplaced,
And maiden virtue rudely strumpeted
And right perfection wrongfully disgraced,
And strength by limping sway disabled,
And art made tongue-tied by authority,
And folly, doctor-like, controlling skill,
And simple truth miscalled simplicity,
And captive good attending captain ill:
Tired with all these, from these would I be gone,
Save that, to die, I leave my love alone.

Composer

Dmitri Shostakovich was a Russian composer and pianist. He achieved fame in the Soviet Union, although later developed a more complex and difficult relationship with the government. As a composer, he combined a variety of different musical techniques into his works, and his music is characterised by sharp contrast, grotesque elements, and ambivalent tonality.

Translation:

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet, and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613, at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, which has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, and religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
