Printemps nouveau (1884)

Printemps nouveau

Les cieux bleus s'ouvrent infinis,
Dans l'air plus de sombres nuages;
Les oiseaux s'échappent des nids
Et s'appellent dans les feuillages;
Les fleurs se mêlent aux gazons,
A peine, de la veille, écloses;
On voit partout des papillons
Voltiger, des lilas aux roses!
Le soleil, enfin radieux,
Prodigue sa lumière blonde,
Il met, parses rayons joyeux,
Mille paillettes d'or sur l'onde.
La brise passe en murmurant,
Et semble avoir trempé ses ailes
Dans quelque parfum pénétrant
Qui trouble toutes les cervelles!
Avril, le mois des doux secrets,
Réveille la terre endormie,
Les bois ont des senteurs discrets:
Viens nous en nous aimer, ma mie!

New spring

Blue skies extend to infinity,
No more dark clouds above;
Birds leave their nests
And call one another among the leaves;
Flowers, hardly open the night before,
Mingle with the grasses;
Butterflies can be seen everywhere,
Flitting from lilac to rose!
The sun, radiant at last,
Sheds lavishly its white light,
Casting, with its scattered rays of joy,
A thousand golden spangles on the waves.
The breeze blows murmuring past
And seems to drench its wing
In some subtle perfume
Which excites all our brains.
April, the month of sweet secrets,
Awakens the sleeping earth,
Forests shed discreet scents:
Let us love one another, my darling!
