Co sem to udělal? (1920)

Part of a series or song cycle:

The Diary of One who Disappeared, (Zápisník zmizelého)

Co sem to udělal?

Co sem to udělal?
Jaká to vzpomněnka!
Gdyž bych já měl pravit
cigánce: maměnka.
Cigánce maměnka,
cigánu tatíček,
rači bych si uťal
od ruky malíček!
Vyletěl skřivánek
vyletěl z ořeší,
moje truchlé srdce
nigdo nepotěší.

What has come over me?

What has come over me?
What is it I have done?
Must I now learn to love
Gypsies who call me son?
Father a Gypsy lout?
Mother a Gypsy slut?
Better that a finger
from my own hand were cut.
There’s a lark above me,
offering me gladness,
but my heart is heavy,
who can ease my sadness?
