Es liebte einst ein Hase (1918) Op. 66

Part of a series or song cycle:

Der Krämerspiegel (Op. 66)

Es liebte einst ein Hase

Es liebte einst ein Hase
Die salbungsvolle Phrase,
Obschon wie ist das sonderbar,
Sein Breitkopf hart und härter war.
Hu, wisst ihr, was mein Hase tut?
Oft saugt er Komponistenblut
Und platzt hernach vor Edelmut.

Es liebte einst ein Hase

A Hare once loved
Oleaginous waffle,
Though strangely enough
His Flat Head grew ever harder.
Ugh! You know what my Hare does?
He often sucks composers’ blood,
Then bursts with magnanimity.
