В сем гробе верный чижик мой!
Природы милое творенье,
Из мирной облости земной
Он улетел, как сновиденье.
Он для любви на свете жил,
Он нежной песенкой приветной,
За ласку нежную платил,
И подлетал к руке приветной.
Но в свете страшно и любить:
Ему был дан дружок крылатый;
Чтоб милого не пережить,
Он в гробе скрылся от утраты.

Vasily Zhukovsky was the foremost Russian poet of the 1810s and a leading figure in Russian literature in the first half of the 19th century. He held a high position at the Romanov court as tutor to the Grand Duchess Alexandra Feodorovna and later to her son, the future Tsar-Liberator Alexander II.
