Schicksalsahnung

Part of a series or song cycle:

7 Karst-Lieder

Schicksalsahnung

Ein wogendes Gedränge geht um mich,
ich hör' es rauschen; hinweg!
hier wird mein scharfes Ohr,
kein Zukunftslied erlauschen.
Und doch, es klingt so sonderbar:
Mein Land hab 'ich verlassen!
den grauen Karst, des Waldes Ernst...
ich kann es selbst nicht fassen!
Es blitzt mit hellem Leuchten auf,
ein Stern durchs wirre Treiben,
wie Schicksalsahnung will sein Glanz
mir im Gedächtnis bleiben!

Fateful presentiment

A heaving throng swirls around me,
I hear it murmur: away!
My sharp ears will not detect
Any song of the future here.
And yet, it sounds so strange:
I have left my country!
The grey karst, the forest’s gravity . . .
I myself cannot grasp it!
With a sudden bright gleam
A star flashes through this turmoil;
Its glow will linger long in my memory
Like a fateful presentiment.
