Ruhetal (1854)

Ruhetal

Wann im letzten Abendstrahl
Goldne Wolkenberge steigen
Und wie Alpen sich erzeigen,
Frag' ich oft mit Tränen:
„Liegt wohl zwischen jenen
Mein ersehntes Ruhetal?”

Tranquil valley

When in the last rays of evening
Golden cloud-hills climb the sky
And appear like mountains,
I often ask as I weep:
‘Might the tranquil valley I crave
Lie somewhere in their midst?’
