Tag meines Lebens! (1901)

Part of a series or song cycle:

Dionysos-Dithyramb, 'Dichtungen von Friedrich Nietzsche'

Tag meines Lebens!

Tag meines Lebens!
die Sonne sinkt.
Schon steht die glatte
Flut vergüldet.
Warm atmet der Fels:
schlief wohl zu Mittag
das Glück auf ihm seinen Mittagsschlaf?
In grünen Lichtern
spielt Glück noch der braune Abgrund herauf.
Tag meines Lebens!
gen Abend geht’s!
Schon glüht dein Auge
halbgebrochen,
schon quillt deines Tau’s
Tränengeträufel,
schon läuft still über weiße Meere
deiner Liebe Purpur,
deine letzte zögernde Seligkeit . . .

Day of my life!

Day of my life!
the sun sinks.
Already the glassy
tide is gilded.
The rock breathes warmth:
did fortune take a short siesta
there at noon?
From the brown chasm
Fortune flashes up in glimmers of green.
Day of my life!
dusk draws near!
Already your eye gleams
half broken,
already your dew
falls like tears,
already the purple of your love,
your last faltering bliss,
spills silently over white seas . . .
